Introduction
Elephant Island is a remote, ice-covered island in the South Shetland Islands, off the Antarctic Peninsula. Surrounded by the harsh waters of the Southern Ocean, it is famous for its dramatic glaciers, rugged coastline, and the extraordinary survival story of Ernest Shackleton’s crew in 1916. Uninhabited and rarely visited, Elephant Island remains one of Antarctica’s most isolated and inhospitable places.
